About the Band

About the Band

The band was formed some 16 years ago to play a 60’s charity evening at “The Rec” in Highworth, Wiltshire. Since 1996 the band has undergone a number of personnel changes with only Rob Gillespie (lead / rhythm guitar and vocals) and Will Peapell (lead vocals) being remaining members of the original line up.

Fundraising

Since 1996 HangFire has helped raise substantial funds for local charities including British Heart Foundation, Breakthrough and NSPCC, to date the figure stands at over £150,000

Band Members

The band now comprises Rob (guitars and vocals), Will (lead vocals), Paul Houldey (drums), Les Durrant (bass guitar/vocals), and Bill Murdoch (keyboards). Will, Rob, Les and Paul have been playing in bands since the 1960’s and in the case of Will, Rob and Les had become semi – professionals with various rock bands in the 1970s before abandoning “the dream” for more conventional careers.

Will Peapell: Lead vocals. Wiltshire born and bred, he commenced singing in blues rock bands in the late 1960s and became professional touring the UK with Stonewall Jackson. Since then has been involved with many local bands including Hector’s House before joiningHangFire in 1997.

Rob Gillespie:   Guitar and backing vocals. Took to playing in amateur bands in the east midlands in the mid 1970s and supported acts such as ASWAD before heading south in 1979 eventually playing in the blues and jazz funk scene around Brighton and the south coast. Moved to Wiltshire and formed HangFire in 1996.

Paul Houldey:   Percussion. From South Wales. Commenced playing in amateur blues rock bands in the 1970s producing the Seathroughalbum with Lala Lapla, eventually joining HangFire in 2004.

Les Durrant:  Bass guitar and backing vocals.   He played lead guitar and keyboards  in local blues bands in his home city, Norwich, before moving  to London in 1970 where he played with a number of blues and rock bands in the  London music scene, including playing with Free Country. After a spell away the music scene and having moved to Wiltshire  he  joined HangFire in 2007, originally to play lead guitar, but took over on bass guitar in 2008.

Bill Murdoch:   Keyboards. A life-long desire to play in a band led to him joining HangFire in 2010 to play keyboards.

Songs

The band play a collection of songs from 1960 through to present day and have become extremely  popular with audiences particularly because of their live performances. A selection of the band’s extensive song list is available on the website.
